Get To Know The Zest: Ryan Buckingham
What got you interested in Soccer?
“I have been playing soccer since the age of four. I started out like most kids did that age by playing AYSO, and from there I have enjoyed it ever since”.
Who is your favorite soccer player?
“My favorite field player is Ronaldo because of how hard he worked to get to where he is today. My favorite goalkeeper is Buffon because of how consistently well he has played throughout his career, especially recently with the age he is at”.
What is your major?
“My major at the University of San Francisco is finance. I chose this major because I love working with money and enjoy learning how sports teams and companies work financially”.
Did you ever consider or play any other sports?
“Growing up I played many different sports besides soccer from basketball to baseball to golf, because I loved sports in general. Soccer though was the one that I enjoyed the most and was really good at so I stopped playing other sports to focus on soccer”.
What are your long-term aspirations?
“My long-term aspirations are to play soccer professionally anywhere in the world. After my soccer career is over I want to work for the front office of a sports team in any of the professional leagues in the U.S. or work on Wall Street. Sports have been a major part of my life, so working for a sports team is something I will strongly enjoy doing”.
What do you expect playing this season for the Zest?
“This is my first season playing with the Zest. I expect us to do really well this season. I believe we can win our conference, and make a good run in the playoffs if everyone puts in the work and believes that we can do great things this season. I also am looking forward to playing at a high level with players that I have not played with before”.
What advice can you give aspiring soccer players?
“To always believe in yourself and your abilities and to always work hard to achieve your goals and to never give up on your dreams”.
What are some of the biggest obstacles you have dealt with?
“My biggest obstacle that I have had to overcome is my mental state because I am really hard on myself. I strive to be great and desire to achieve great things when it comes to soccer”.
Any other positions you have played or are interested in playing?
“Back in the day I was a striker till the age of ten. In one game the coach asked anyone on the team if they could play keeper for the game, and I decided to jump in. From then on the rest is history and I have been a keeper ever since.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
“In my spare time I like to hang out with friends, play pick up basketball and soccer with friends, and workout”.
