Get To Know The Zest: Andy Ritchie

Do you have family members in soccer or other sports who inspired you? 
“My dad played when he was younger and my little brother plays professionally for Dundee United in Scotland right now”. Born in Bellshill, Scotland Andrew is son to Jim and Maggie. He has four siblings: Pam, Dawn, Becky and Gavin.

Who was/is your favorite soccer player?
“I think my favorite player was Fabio Cannavaro (Italy). I loved the way he played and at the times I played the same position as him”.

Are  there any teams nationally or internationally that you follow?
“Glasgow Rangers (Scotland)”. Rangers Football Club plays in the Scottish Premiership which is the first tier of the Scottish Professional Football League. Their home grounds remains Ibrox Stadium in the south-west of the city.

Is soccer always what you wanted to do or did you consider any other sports?
“Soccer is the only sport I ever really wanted to do”.

What is major in college?
“Exercise Sports Science because of my interest in all things athletics and at Point Loma Nazarene University”.

What are your long term aspirations?
“To play at the highest level I can”.

What do you expect this season playing with the Zest?
“I expect an exciting season with a lot of competitive games and bettering myself as a player”.

What advice can you give a young/aspiring soccer player?
“Work hard and enjoy doing what you love”.

Have you played or would like to play any other position on the field?
“I played fullback a lot growing up but I enjoy playing my current position, center-mid”. The senior, who stands 5 ft. 10 in and weigh 160 pounds, also has a great balance of strength and speed which his opponents have always had a hard time adjusting to.

What have been your biggest obstacles to overcome (physical, mental, injuries)?
“I have had a few bad injuries in recent times but have learned a lot by going through them”.

How has your technique changed or improved?
“I feel like my technique is always slightly changing and have improved in different aspects of my game”.

What do you like to do for fun in your spare time?
“I like to go and explore San Diego and California with friends”.
