San Diego, CA – After a back-and-forth battle that featured 9 goals, San Diego Zest FC 2 (2-2) came away with a nail biter victory over Bell Gardens FC (0-3). Former George Washington University and 2016 Atlantic 10 Conference Midfielder of the year MF Garrett Heine, #27, led the way with 2 goals and an assist, including a header goal to sealed the deal for Zest FC 2 in extra time of 2nd half off an excellent corner kick by MF Victor Magana, #6 graduated Santa Clare University.

The scoring spree started from the very first whistle, as Bell Gardens FC scored a breakaway goal in the 3rd minute to take an early 1-0 lead.

Zest FC 2 did not let that affect them offensively, as FW Donovan Wilson, #20 graduated Oceanside High School, put Zest FC 2 on the board in the 21st minute for his first goal for the Fall 2017 UPSL season.

Wilson was not the only one who wanted to join the scoring party, as MF Fredy Cedillo, #8 San Diego Mesa College, also scored his first goal after a couple of ricochets off a corner kick in extra time at the end of 1st half.

This was only the very beginning, as the goal scoring for both teams began immediately.

In the 58th minute, Bell Gardens FC scored to tie the game at 2-2. However, Zest FC got a penalty kick opportunity in the 62nd minute after Zest FC 2’s Wilson got shoved to the ground, leading to a penalty kick goal by Heine.

However, Bell Gardens FC did not back down, answering back to score immediate in the 66th minute to tie the game back 3-3.

Then, in the 76th minute, Heine cut off a pass in the backfield, starting a counter-attack, and provided a perfect pass to FW Sergio Gonzalez, #11 Mira Costa College, from the midfield center line. After that, Gonzalez’s nifty dribbling broke him away from the last line of defense in the penalty box area, then drilled the ball with his left foot right in between the goalkeeper’s legs to get Zest FC 2 back in the lead 4-3.

The goal-scoring did not end there, as Bell Gardens FC answered again in the 86th minute, scoring off a free kick to tie the game again 4-4.

In extra time, Wilson somehow earned Zest FC 2 a corner kick opportunity despite a sea of Bell Gardens FC players surrounding him trying to take the ball away from him. Wilson’s work to protect the ball led to Heine’s goal off Magana’s corner kick to seal the game for good 5-4.

Zest FC 2 will look to continue to continue its winning ways after this emotional victory when they travel to face off vs. Valley United FC this upcoming Saturday, October 14th.
